Data Analysis for Financial Managers Using Microsoft Excel


This course is designed to instruct participants on the principles of data analysis while demonstrating the value of Microsoft® Excel and its ability to help budget analysts and consultants make effective program and agency decisions. Participants will learn how to validate data, construct financial models, perform what-if scenarios, evaluate financial alternatives, perform cost-volume analysis, solve linear programming problems, and analyze waiting lines using queuing theory models.


  • Perform basic statistical validity calculations
  • Calculate cost, labor hour, and project schedule variances, and forecast projects’ final costs and completion times, using Excel
  • Use Excel’s financial functions to calculate the amounts, rates, and time necessary to achieve financial goals or meet financial requirements
  • Calculate the financial value of a project or proposal and select among alternatives using basic measures such as Net Benefit (NB), Present Value (PV), Net Present Value (NPV), and the Internal Rate of Return (IRR)
  • Calculate break-even points and/or required volumes via graphical analysis, algebra, or Excel’sGoal Seek tool to achieve financial goals
  • Utilize Excel’sData Table and Scenario Manager tools to display the results of various financial scenarios with altering variables
  • Utilize Excel’sSolver tool to create optimal job and supply or supplier assignments, given known outputs and constraints
  • Analyze and conduct model line and Monte Carlo simulations using a single server and an exponential distribution for service and arrival rates

Participants should be reasonably proficient in English. Applicants must live up to Indepth Research Services (IRES) admission criteria.


The instructor led trainings are delivered using a blended learning approach and comprises of presentations, guided sessions of practical exercise, web based tutorials and group work. Our facilitators are seasoned industry experts with years of experience, working as professional and trainers in these fields.

All facilitation and course materials will be offered in English. The participants should be reasonably proficient in English.


The training is residential and will be held at IRES Training Centre. The course fee covers the course tuition, training materials, two break refreshments, lunch, and study visits.

All participants will additionally cater for their, travel expenses, visa application, insurance, and other personal expenses.

Payment for all courses includes a registration fee, which is non-refundable and equals 15% of the total sum of the course fee.

  1. Participants may cancel attendance 14 days or more prior to the training commencement date.
  2. No refunds will be made 14 days or less to the training commencement date. However, participants who are unable to attend may opt to attend a similar training at a later date, or send a substitute participant provided the participation criteria have been met
