WASH Programmes Reporting Course


In this course, you will explore relevant and contemporary ideas which can be applied in programme management pertinent to assessment, reporting, and evaluation. You will design, refine and apply assessment, reporting and evaluation strategies relevant in WASH programmes.

At the conclusion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Explore and analyze relevant and contemporary ideas relating to assessment, reporting, and evaluation
  • Critically reflect on current theories and approaches relevant in WASH programme management
  • Investigate, design, produce and justify a project that encompasses themes considered in this training.
  • Analyze and synthesize project findings to generate new knowledge that impacts on professional practice
  • Communicate project conclusions to specialist and non-specialist audiences.


Module 1:


  • What is a report
  • Types of reports
  • The relevance of strong proposals and quality reports in a competitive scenario.
  • Basic proposal elements, proposal formats, and proposal summary.
  • Call analysis, project concept development, formulation of the project objectives and a preliminary work plan.

 Sections of a standard report

  • The record of an order of events
  • Explanation of the implication of these events or facts
  • Evaluation of the facts or results of research presented
  • Discussion of the consequences of a conclusion or course of action
  • Conclusions

Project Report Writing Input Sessions

  • The importance of developing professional reports for stakeholders
  • General structures and components of written reports
  • Achieving coherence and cohesion in project report writing

  • Best and Worst Examples of Government Reports: Coherence, Readability, and Structure
  • Accuracy (clarity) of meaning and language
  • Appropriate project report writing styles

  • IT Skills - Creation and maintenance of lengthy documents; Using styles to format documents; Create an automatic table of contents
  • Project Reports – Preparing Status/Progress Reports: project tracking, scope definition, and project schedule and deliverables

Module 3:

Reporting part I

  • Importance of quality reporting in a competitive business environment.
  • Determining suitable reporting for different audiences.
  • Key elements of technical reporting.
  • Monthly progress reports, activity reports, routine reports, field trip reports, meetings reports.
  • Elements of a good budget.
  • Finalizing the proposal with the Budget Development discussing final issues and introducing a real proposal.
  • Local and international trends in report and proposal writing
  • Why the business world is now trying to simplify reports.
  • Taking a reader-centered approach.
  • Concept to a construction-a practical guide to report-building
  • How to produce a powerful one-page executive summary
  • Why knowing how to self-edit is a must for anyone writing a report.

Module 4:

Reporting Part II

  • Integrating research sources into Project Report writing
  • Project Report writing for government agencies: how to engage key stakeholders, including internal reporting for government and external reporting for public release
  • Project Report writing for international organizations (donor agencies), including monitoring and evaluation (M&E)
  • Financial, economic and policy concepts relevant to reporting
  • Measuring and reporting on policy and financial outcomes.

Module 5:

Report Writing Project:

  • Working on writing a draft project report
  • Feedback from peers and course leaders throughout the program
  • Opportunities for self-editing
  • Opportunities for peer editing
  • Submission of the final project report
  • Course Leader feedback on the final document.


The instructor-led training is delivered using a blended learning approach and comprises of presentations, guided sessions of practical exercise, web-based tutorials and group work. Our facilitators are seasoned industry experts with years of experience, working as professional and trainers in these fields.

All facilitation and course materials will be offered in English. The participants should be reasonably proficient in English.


Upon successful completion of this training, participants will be issued with an Indepth Research Services (IRES) certificate.


The training will be held at the IRES Training Centre in Kigali, Rwanda. The course fee covers the course tuition, training materials, two break refreshments, lunch, and study visits.

All participants will additionally cater for their, travel expenses, visa application, insurance, and other personal expenses.
